How to Make a Consistent Golf Swing with an Image Thoughts!

One of the ways you can make your golf swing consistent is to have a consistent backswing where you are swinging to the same point every time.

Over the years, I have found that image swing thoughts work the best to achieve the desired consistency above all other as your brain somehow manages to get your muscles right when you think of an “image”.

So what is this image?

Well, I will let you on a little secret.  For me, I imagine my hands about level with my eyes above my shoulders.   When I imagine my hands being in that certain position, I inevitably swing back correctly with my body.  From there, it’s piece of cake, just rip through the ball and same results every time.

Imagery is probably the most under-rated forms of swing thoughts, stuff that can actually hold up under pressure.

Instead of thinking, “keep my head down”, see an image of your head being in the position where you want while you swing.

Instead of thinking, “follow through”, see an image of yourself following through the golf ball while you swing through the ball.

You see, swing thoughts are only good if you can make an image of it.  I assure you, this results in more consistency in you golf swing.

P.S. My golf swing is coming back a bit, today I hit the golf ball really far, I will be playing for Pepsi Tour mini tournaments probably starting in July, wish me luck!

Okay, here’s some swing thoughts that helped me hit the ball really great yesterday even with a 5-month layoff:

  • Keep your grip super light.
  • Swing with your body as a whole, don’t overswing.
  • Smooth, fluid rhythm, keep everything moving, momentum works best when continuous.

I started hitting the ball really good after I realized that I was overswing.  I wasn’t over-swinging like John Daly or nothin’ like that but my backswing was long enough where I felt like my arms were coming off my body.  When you do that, it’s a lot harder to control your swing plus you will need perfect timing to hit the ball solid.

Instead, I shortened my swing a bit, feeling like my whole body (the hands, arms, and your torso) were moving “together”.   This kept my hands and arms in front of by body at all times (also result of shortening my swing), and I hit the ball super solid and straight.

How to Swing Better by Not Being Perfect!

Sometimes, perfection can be the root of all evil things in a golf swing.  A lot of times when I was playing competitively on a daily basis, I would try to perfect my golf swing by banging 10 buckets of balls.  I would have probably done better if I just relaxed more and focused more on my short game and putting.

Golf is a game that requires great mental focus, it’s a not a game where the best golf swing mechanics win tournaments.  Rather, golfers with ability to turn the golf course into their friend wins as evidenced by Y.E. Yang’s win over Tiger last weekend.

That said, I hit balls for the first time in about 3 months yesterday and boy, I hit the ball really, really good.

Here’s something I tried to do yesterday:

  • I tried to not be perfect, simply relax my hands and let my body do the work.
  • My swing though consisted of “keep it smooth” like Fred Couples.
  • Worked on specific shots that would help me on the golf course like fading the ball (which is my strength) and odd shots that could get me out of trouble.

In all, yesterday’s practice at the driving range might have helped me whole lot more than me simply banging a lot of balls mindlessly one after another.

The key to great golf is keeping your golf swing consistent.   The only way an average golfer who rarely practices to keep their golf swing consistent is to keep their swing thoughts simple.

Golf has so many parts to master but unless you are a professional golfer with all the time in the world, you are not going to master it.

Forget “fixing” your swing and try simply “scoring” with your current golf swing.  Whatever your bad shots are, a nasty hook or banana slice, you can still “score” well by adjusting to your weaknesses and using them as strengths.

I’ve seen it a gazillion times where a golfer with a really weird swing will win over a golfer who has a perfect swing.  Most of the time, the golfer with a really weird swing has an incredible short game and a knack for putting since he/she is hitting the ball all over the place.  The golfer with perfect swing usually never performs under pressure because he/she simply does not know how to deal with trouble under pressure.

Anyways, I will be heading over to the course more often before this summer ends and looks like they got the tent set up at Harding Park for the President’s Cup 2009 this year. (I have an incredible view of the 12th hole at Harding Park from my 12th floor apartment!)

Well, I took most of the last 3 months off from golf due to my new business developments but I had finally took the time to go out golfing the other day.

I hit the ball pretty good as usual, here’s my swing thoughts:

1. Control the swing with your body.

2. Develop a good continuous rhythm, similar to dancing or rappin’.

3. Stay centered over your body and balanced.

Remember my post on swing thoughts the other day?

Well, today I had another great swing day and have one more modification:

Think more about the process of keeping your upper spine very vertical on the downswing and also think more about the downswing process and let the backswing dictate itself.

What I mean is that you want to be really thinking about the end result, which is good follow-through.  Once you get a good follow-through going, your backswing will naturally follow that path.  It’s never the other way around, similar to hitting bunker shots.

Well, the only reason I made this blog in the first place was to record my swing thoughts so I can go back in the future to see the swing thoughts I had when my ball striking and short game was good.

Today was a really good ball striking day, perhaps the best in a long, long time.

Here’s are my thoughts through the swing:

Address

Make sure to setup up with the left foot about 15 degrees open, I have a bad habit of opening up almost 45 degrees, which hinders my balance.

Takeaway

I really want to feel like I am taking my stomach and all of upper body together away from the ball on-plane.

After that, I simply feel the momemtum of my body (stomach and all of upper body) swinging a little further to the top of the swing while cocking the clubs with my hands.

I don’t really feel the top of my backswing anymore as I feel the body constantly moving in action.  But from the top, I really feel like my whole body simply swings inside-out pivoting on my upper body or the spine.

Well, that’s about it.

This also worked really well with the short pitch and chip shots.

Today’s swing keys:

1. Keep weight transfer natural, meaning don’t force yourself to transfer weight to the right on the backswing, let it be natural.

2. To control the weight transfer to the right from becoming a sway, do not sway and turn.  Also control the amount of the weight transfer by limiting your backswing length.

Short backswing = smaller weight transfer

3. On the downswing, really let everything go and extend your arms and wrists.  Keep the head down through the shot.

Well, I am hitting the ball again and I might actual apply for Amateur reinstatement to play some amateur tournaments again.  There’s simply not enough mini-tour tournaments around San Francisco and I cannot afford to play so many mini-tour events right now.  It’s gonna cost me $125 just to get my amateur status back though, darn it.  You can actually go to USGA online and do everything online now.

Time to go beat the amateurs baby!  Wish me luck on the next year’s U.S. Amateur.

Swing Tips - Swing at your target, not the ball!

Today, I had a chance to video tape the person behind me accidently. Here’s how he could be hitting the ball better.

As you can see in the above picture, his left arm and left hand breaks down after impact. This is a very no-no if you want to hit the ball straight and long.

Now the reason behind that a lot of golfer break down their arms after impact is because they are trying to hit the ball.

How to fix the problem?

It’s easy. Don’t try to hit the ball, try to swing through the ball at your target.

I actually try to hit the target with both of my arms, imagining the target in my mind, never the ball. The ball always comes in the way of the swing.

As you can see, my after impact position shows that both of my arms are fully extended after impact. This is the position you want to strive to.

Also note the yellow line and see how straight the point between my right elbow and the club? (That’s the secret. A full release means that even your wrists straighten out near and after impact. The wrists release upwards, not toward the target, this is something a lot of teachers and players do not tell you.)

Mind you, my swing isn’t perfect my any means but I am only pointing out the good parts. (and yes this 2-iron did go straight about 230 yards so I can’t complain)

Today’s Swing Thoughts

I really felt that my hands were soft throughout my swing, meaning I felt like swinging real easy.

To get this feeling, try to maintain the same amount of grip pressure during your whole swing, whether you grip it at level 2 or level 5.

I also really felt like really swinging through the “after-impact” position shown above. That’s actually my swing thought, the image of both of my arms fully extended and released after impact. The lower body must support your upper body so don’t forget the lower body action either.

My Last Swing Thoughts…

I haven’t been golfing that much lately other than hitting some balls. (actually just once this year)

My last outing went pretty well though so here are my key thoughts:

1. Swing in rhythm

2. Really feel like standing up.

3. Swing like butter, like Freddy Couples.

4. During practice, hit each ball with thought and quality. Don’t just bang 100 balls and tell yourself you’ve practiced. Even though I don’t practice much or even play ever, I can pretty much take money from everyone because I practice “quality” practicing. This is definitely psychological effect that “quality” practice can give you, by letting you only see your best efforts. If you simply bang balls and not give it your 200% on every practice shot, exact same thing will happen during a round of golf and you’ve just wasted an hour of hitting balls.
