How to Practice with Less Balls at the Driving Range!

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Today, let me give you a couple tips that will save you money at the driving range, all the while getting a better practice session every time you go out there.

Here’s a couple rules I used to “live” by when I used to play mini-tour events:

1. For every practice shot, make sure you do 2-3 practice swings.  That’s right, practice makes perfect, not simply banging balls.

2. For every practice shot, before the shot, imagine and visualize how the golf ball will react after you hit the ball.

3. For every practice shot, before the shot, imagine and visualize how you will swing.  Visualize yourself swinging that ball perfectly in rhythm and balance.

Believe me, mind does some awesome stuff for golf.

4. For every practice shot, line-up your shot before hitting the ball from behind the ball like a real shot.

Why would you practice as if it “wasn’t” real?  Every shot I practice is the same as the shot I hit under pressure.

This type of mentality helps your conscious to stay the “same” even when playing for real money.  On the other hand, banging a lot of balls perfect does the opposite to you when you play because you are simply not that perfect, not even Tiger.

5. For every practice shot, imagine a real green, bunkers, and fairways.  You should always have a target on your practice shot and it’s even better if you can imagine hitting a certain shot for EVERY practice shot.

6. For every practice shot, hit a different club.  You don’t hit the same club over and over again on the golf course, why would you make it that easy for yourself on the driving range?

Basically, all these tips make you spend most of your time getting ready for your golf shot, just like a real golf shot on the golf course.

Now, if you can’t even hit your pitching wedge past 50 yards, this might not be a good advice for you.  But if you have broken 80 or 90 already and you want to get better mentally, this is how you gotta practice.

Maybe not all the time but most of time, you will reap the benefits of hitting every practice shot after you are mentally and physically ready for it.

Using this method, I usually do 500 practice swing with just 100 practice balls and my practice’s quality goes UP, way high.  And this shows on the golf course if I shoot couple under.

Today’s Advanced Swing Thoughts

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Today’s swing keys:

1. Keep weight transfer natural, meaning don’t force yourself to transfer weight to the right on the backswing, let it be natural.

2. To control the weight transfer to the right from becoming a sway, do not sway and turn.  Also control the amount of the weight transfer by limiting your backswing length.

Short backswing = smaller weight transfer

3. On the downswing, really let everything go and extend your arms and wrists.  Keep the head down through the shot.

Well, I am hitting the ball again and I might actual apply for Amateur reinstatement to play some amateur tournaments again.  There’s simply not enough mini-tour tournaments around San Francisco and I cannot afford to play so many mini-tour events right now.  It’s gonna cost me $125 just to get my amateur status back though, darn it.  You can actually go to USGA online and do everything online now.

Time to go beat the amateurs baby!  Wish me luck on the next year’s U.S. Amateur.

About

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Hi there, my name is Max.

Welcome to ProGolferDigest.com.

As a former pro golfer playing in various mini-tour tournaments and other stints as a Pro golfer, I’d like to share what I have learned from other Pro golfers and famous teachers such as Tiger’s old coach, Butch Harmon who was my last golf coach.

Why am I not on the PGA Tour yet?

Well, I broke my finger and I ran out of funding and money to keep going as a pro and dove into the corporate world, wasting my youth and energy to make a living. My finger injury lasted almost 2+ years before I could play normal golf again.

Now, I am on my own at least, making money with blogs. My next goal is to make enough money so I can support my pro-tour challenge. I am currently getting ready to play some mini-tour events and Nationwide Tour Monday Qualifyings for 2012. I know it’s going to take me couple years to get to the PGA, but I thought I’d make a blog and tell you about my journeys there.

I will be doing swing analysis of pro golfers and also critiquing my own golf swing. By simply reading my golf analysis, you will learn everything I have learned from various pro golfers and teachers.

Why don’t you become a teaching professional?

Well, I don’t want to end up as a golf teacher. My goal has been always to “play” competitive golf and nothing else. Heck, I do teach golf right here, on my blog. That’s the least I can do to give back the 19 years of golf experience that I have.

My tips are genuine, from an actual mini-tour golfer, and Top 10 ’97 High School Californian golfer (or at least I was 10th in all California in high school), me, Max Lee.  Your golf swing will improve more because my tips are personal and they work!

See my best golf tips.

You can find me at San Bruno driving range off 280 if you are in SF Bay Area, maybe we can hit up a chat.

Can you do any trick shots?

Yes, I actually do hold the world record for most shots hit with 1 golf ball.

Here’s the video on YouTube:

See this post for HOWTO do this.

Here’s the updated version where I hit the ball again while its in mid-air:

What’s your handicap?

Well, I haven’t had that much time to play lately since I have to make a living in front of my PC but I will shoot anywhere near par whenever I go out.  (+1-3 handicap…)  My lowest score is a 64 so far, which isn’t great by pro tour standards but yes, I will take most people’s money when we bet for skins.  My goal is to shoot 4-6 under consistently on any course I play, which is something most pro tours can do.

Do you have any swing tips?

You can check out some of my best swing tips here.

Will reading your blog help my golf game?

Here’s a comment from one of my long-time readers that proves you can get better at golf by reading my golf tips:

“Max, I had been studying Hogan’s swing on my own for the last few years. But not until I came across your website did I put all the pieces together. Thank you so much for giving back. I am hitting the ball straight with plenty of power and enjoying ever minute of golf. J.G.”

Thanks, J.G., that means everything to me, I will keep working harder and try to give you guys the best golf tips in the world.
