Swing Thoughts!

Well, I took most of the last 3 months off from golf due to my new business developments but I had finally took the time to go out golfing the other day.

I hit the ball pretty good as usual, here’s my swing thoughts:

1. Control the swing with your body.

2. Develop a good continuous rhythm, similar to dancing or rappin’.

3. Stay centered over your body and balanced.

Smart Ball Marker!

For hundreds of years, professional and amateur golfers alike have been using a coin to mark their balls. Now, here’s a new, innovative Smart Ball Marker from Titleist developement team that will help you align the ball better while also preserving the location of the ball much better.

Great concept and I am sure a bunch of pros are using this already on tour.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Scotty Cameron was excited. Actually, he was more than excited. He was pumped up, his enthusiasm bubbling over as he was proudly displaying his latest innovation.

It’s called the Scotty Cameron Ball Tool and it’s basically the next generation in ball markers. It’s a simple flat, square piece of metal with a small semi-circular indention cut into one side where the golf ball goes. Stamped on the marker right next to the indention is a series of alignment markers that allows the player to line up his putt even after he marks his ball.

Cameron got the idea earlier this year after he became aggravated watching professional golfers spend so much time going back and forth between the ball and the hole to make sure their balls were aimed properly at the cup.

Camilo Villegas Wins the Tour Championships!

Camilo Villegas wins the Tour Championships to finish the 2008 PGA Tour in style. What seemed like a bad bogey on 16th hole was recovered with a remarkable birdie on the 17th hole by Camilo.

That makes it 2 wins in the last 2 starts, the last time that someone won 2 consecutive tournaments was over 10 years ago.

What makes it interesting is that Camilo was able to beat all the best players in the world with his A+ game on Sunday yet again.

I feel very sorry for Sergio Garcia, who I believe has more talent but talent and luck must come together on the last day for someone to win.

Golf Ball History - Featheries, Gutta Percha, and more…

Golf balls have been developed for over the last 500-600 years or so and it’s very interesting to note that golf balls in the beginning, consisted of bird feathers stuffed inside some cow/horse leather called, “Featherie”.

Now, these featheries were great for couple hundered years.

Here’s an excerpt from golfeurope.com on featherie history:

In 1618 the feather golf ball or ‘Featherie’ was introduced. This was a handcrafted ball made with goose feathers tightly packed into a horsefeatherie golf ball or cow hide sphere. The feathers and leather were fashioned into a ball while wet. As the assembly dried out the leather shrank and the feathers expanded to create a hardened ball. The ball was then finished off by painting it and punched with the ball-makers mark. Quality varied according to the skill of the craftsman. Unfortunately, the handcrafted nature of the balls meant that they were priced beyond the pockets of the masses, sometimes more expensive than a club. Notable ball-makers of the 1600s were Andrew Dickson, Leith and Henry Mills, St Andrews.

Next up is the Gutta Percha, made from the rubber tree sap given off by the Gutta tree. These balls were definitely easy to mold but couldn’t really travel beyond 200 yards. They still didn’t have “dimples” which allow golf balls to travel further.

Here’s an excerpt from thedesignshop.com on Gutta Percha history:

The first “Gutta” ball is believed to have been made in 1848 by the Rev. Dr. Robert Adams Paterson from gutta-percha packing material. Gutta-percha is the evaporated milky juice or latex produced from a tree most commonly found in Malaysia. It is hard and non-brittle and becomes soft and impressible at the temperature of boiling water. Gutta balls, were handmade by rolling the softened material on a board. The new durability of the Gutta, together with its much lower cost, resistance to water, and improved run, provided rejuvenation to the game of golf. Not without some resistance from traditionalists, the Gutta gradually replaced the Feathery.

After that, there’s the rubber core golf ball, then balatas, and now 3-piece core balls.

Perhaps, one day, golf manufacturers will start making these cool featheries and gutta perchas for the masses to enjoy. Imagine playing your same 7,000 yard championship course with these old balls. Then, you will be able to appreciate modern golf equipment.

Americans win the 2008 RyderCup!

Americans win the Ryder Cup this year pretty easily. (without trying)

I think it was really unfair for the Europeans as the American players had better players this year. Well, I cannot prove it by any statistics but take a look at how the teams faired on Sunday here as proof:

As you can see, every American player beat every European player today, except for one halve.
Now, that’s hard to do unless you got some great players.

Azinger asserted repeatedly in the months leading up to the matches that experience was overrated, that what he preferred to have populating his team were hot hands and not wise heads. It was the reason he wanted to change the qualifying structure and to double his captain’s picks to four.

Split equally among rookies and veterans, the U.S. team clearly benefited from the infusion of new talent. The new blood posted a slightly better record, going 9-12-8 and scoring a collective 13 points. They went 4-1-1 in singles on Sunday, a record for singles wins by rookies. The U.S. veterans went 10-8-5 to contribute to 12½ points. They went 3-3 in singles.

Anthony Kim waxed Sergio Garcia in the first singles match to set the tone for the day, but he preceded that with infectious enthusiasm that seemed to light a fire under Phil Mickelson. Hunter Mahan won 3½ points and was the only player on either side to escape defeat playing five matches.

Camilo Villegas gets Down and Under at BMW Championships!

Carmilo Villegas gets it down and under at BMW Championships and finishes at 15-under par, beating all of the top PGA Tour players by 2 strokes.

We think that most of Camilo Villegas’ skill this week came from his getting “down and under” to read putts as he did also finish #1 in putting.

Now in order for someone to achieve similar putting results, we suggest you go work out your arms and make sure to do some leg streching. (Without that, you might now be able to get “down and under”.

I was very surprised that Carmilo Villegas came through on the last day and made some solid putts and shots.

Congratulations on your first win Camilo Villegas, I think we have another young PGA star now.

LPGA Tells Players they must speak English!

LPGA has just announced a new rule that requires all LPGA members(players) to speak English. Players who cannot communicate in English will be suspended.

Here’s a funny quote:

“Being a US-based tour, and with the majority of our fan base, pro-am contestants, sponsors and participants being English speaking, we think it is important for our players to effectively communicate in English,” Galloway said.

Now, I must disagree with this US-based fans. LPGA is not simply for Americans it’s really for the world to see.

If LPGA “thinks” its viewers mainly consist of English speaking people, think again please as a big portion of LPGA viewers also come from Korea, Sweden, and other home countries of LPGA players.

I personally know about a thousand people who watch the LPGA in Korea around 3am simply because of the time difference.

What LPGA really need to do is fire the person who made this stupid rule that is simply prejudice from my standpoint and my upbringing in the United Stated after having moved here at age of nine.

To whoever decided to make this stupid rule that is obviously prejudice against players from non-English speaking countries:

If you simply cannot stand all the Swedes and Korean stars that are taking over the LPGA, quit your job and do something else but don’t tell me you are going to stump on some of the best international LPGA players’ faces by telling them you can’t play if you can’t speak English. Don’t waste my fuckin’ time with you bullshit rules, this isn’t golf this is prejudice bitches. Sorry to be brutally honest but you were being brutally prejudice.

I can tell you that I know this hurts international players more than anything else as English wasn’t my first language either.

Anytime you want to single out a group of race or people, think about this first, “What if I was one of them, would I want to be treated like this?”

It’s a perfectly clear prejudice of another person simply based on where he/she is from, not who he/she is.

This form of prejudice must be stopped in any professional golf or sporting event.

My great peaceful life was going great until this morning I heard this, and I have to say this unjust rule must be gone very quickly. Stupid LPGA officials, that’s what I say.

For now, we will have to wait and see what Florida laws say about discrimination based on someone’s LANGUAGE for god sakes:

But if Korea’s most famous female player was broadly supportive, some civil liberties activists in the US claimed a language requirement could violate state law. “Florida law prohibits discrimination in public accommodations,” said Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Florida. “They may well violate Florida discrimination laws because language is a key element of person’s national origin. People should be judged on their ability to perform a job. English fluency has no more to do with the ability to play 18 holes of golf than whether you walk 18 holes or ride 18 holes.”

Danny Lee becomes the Youngest U.S. Amateur Champion ever!

Danny Lee becomes the youngest U.S. Amateur champion in history of golf as he beat Drew Kittleson in style 5 and 4. He also becomes the very first Korean-born golfer to win the U.S. Amateur. That means Danny Lee is also the very first pure-breed Asian Asian person to win the U.S. Amateur.

UPDATE: Oops, Danny Lee ISN’t the very first Asian person. Actually Tiger Woods is the very first Asian. BTW, Tiger isn’t really black at all, he’s more Thai than anything else.

With Korean ladies taking over the leaderboard in LPGA, Danny Lee is also another one of those players starting the act of taking the PGA Tour along with the young PGA star, Anthony Kim.

Pinehurst, N.C. — Danny Lee became the U.S. Amateur’s youngest champion, supplanting Tiger Woods by holding off Drew Kittleson 5 and 4.

Lee, 18 years and one month old, frittered away most of a six-hole lead before regaining control with consecutive birdies midway through his second trip around Pinehurst’s No. 2 course. He capped his 11th consecutive day of competitive golf by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the 14th.

Lee is six months and 29 days younger than Woods was when he won the first of his three Amateurs in 1994.

The victory gives Lee exemptions into the U.S. and British opens, a probable invitation to The Masters and a 10-year exemption into the U.S. Amateur as long as he remains an amateur.

FedEx Cup - Steve Stricker at the top of the leaderboard

Steve Stricker posted a nice 7-under 64 today to finish at 10-under overall.

In the meanwhile, one of my predictions Anthony Kim shot a 4-under to finish 5-under overall.

I think there’s still too much room for many others to top Steve Stricker over the next 2 days and I think the player must have proved himself before to win.

It will be very interesting over the next two days to see who wins the last PGA tournament of the year.

My bet still goes to Anthony Kim, I hope he wins. :()

With the PGA Tour’s last event and last day yesterday, we are finally going to finalize this year’s PGA Tour with this week’s FedEx Cup challege.

Who will win the FedEx Cup this year?

Martin Laird and Bob Heintz in the lead at Wyndham Championship!

Martin Laird and Bob Heintz are both in the lead at Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour.

Both pros shot a whopping 7-under 63s on Sedgefield Country Club with par of 70.

Bob Heintz actually was at 8-under until the last hole where he scored a bogey.

Other notables include Scott McCarron at 5-under par, Zach Johnson at 4-under par, and David Love III at 4-under par.

From purely scoring point, tour players seem to be having an easy time on this golf course after weeks of hard golf on U.S. Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship.

Of course, a lot of big-name pros are missing this week probably due to the fact that the end of the year is near.

It’s still terrible too early to tell who will win this week, at least Bob Heintz and Marin Laird got their low scores in today.

In the meanwhile, we will do some swing analysis of Martin Laird and Bob Heintz to see who has a better swing.

Segio Garcia finishes 2nd yet again while Padraig Harrington picks up his Back-to-Back PGA Championship!

Padraig Harrington picks up his back-to-back major championship, the PGA Championship and the Birtish Open.

Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia was in the lead most of the day until the 16th hole, where he put his 2nd shot in the lateral hazard where the green is surrounded mostly by water. His bogey there might have cost him the championship as Sergio did not make a bogey until that point. (He was at 4 under until 16th hole)

Padraig Harrington picks up a clutch-win here with 1-putts on 16, 17, and 18th hole. His putter has found him another win while his driving was erratic during the last couple holes.

For the final round, Padraig Harrington shoots a 3-under (4-under for today) and Sergio Garcia shoots a 1-under(2-under today).

Even though Sergio Garcia didn’t win today, it was still a very good score on this course anytime you shoot under par.

Vijay Singh gets on the Winner’s Train again!

After what seems like an infinite run of winning-droughts, Vijay Singh has pulled another win out of his pockets in style at the World Golf Championships with top 25 players in the world all competing agianst him. While Tiger was not there, Vijay seems to have took care of business.(as usual)

The former Master winner will be back on the winning-train officially. We should expect him to win couple more majors in the next few years.

Greg Norman “doesn’t” win the British Open, but watch out…

Greg Norman doesn’t win the British Open today but it was a exciting 1st 3 rounds watching one of my golfing heroes battle it out at 53 years old.

What’s amazing is that Greg has just broke through his 15-year old dryspell of bad rounds. Heck, he is now officially playing the next year’s Masters.

If Greg Norman practiced before this week’s Open, he might have won by 5 or 10 shots. Even with Tiger Woods around, he probably would have won for sure.

Now, it’s up to Greg Norman to believe in himself again and win couple more majors before he really “retires” from major golf.

The same couldn’t be said about Rocco Mediate because it’s different.

Heck, Greg Norman is capable of breaking any of that old-age records. He just proved it to us.

Maybe his last round 77 wasn’t one of his best but I will be waiting for some more top finishes from the former #1 golfer of the world.

Congrats to the winner but I think Greg Norman probably “won” in his terms, outlasted every one of the best golfers of the world.

I look forward to couple more 54-hole leads on Sunday from Greg.
